Note: Determine the type of fuel system installed on your vehicle (carburetor with or without FBC or with TBI/MPI fuel injection) using the table below.
Carburetor
The fuel system consists of a fuel tank, two fuel filters (one in the tank and one in the engine compartment), a fuel pump, an air filter and a two-barrel carburetor.
The fuel pump is a mechanical type attached to the cylinder head. The pump is driven by the camshaft via a pushrod.
The closed-loop carburetor system (FBC), installed on models since 1984, is controlled by a computer that monitors engine parameters via various sensors, compares the received data with parameters stored in memory, and changes the fuel delivery accordingly via actuators mounted on the carburetor. More detailed information is available in Chapter 6.
Fuel injection system
Multi-Point Injection (MPI)
This fuel system consists of a fuel tank, two fuel filters (one in the fuel tank and one in the fuel line), an electric fuel pump, a fuel pressure regulator, a fuel pressure solenoid valve (on some models), fuel supply lines to the injectors, injectors, and an air cleaner.
The fuel pump delivers fuel under pressure to the injectors. The regulator returns excess fuel to the fuel tank and maintains the pressure at a set level.
This computer fuel management system uses various sensors to provide information to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The ECU uses these input signals to determine the length of time the injectors (mounted at each intake valve) are open. For more information, see Chapter 6.
Throttle Body Fuel Injection (TBI) (Central Injection)
This fuel system consists of a fuel tank, two fuel filters (one in the fuel tank and one in the fuel line), an electric fuel pump, a fuel pressure regulator, two injectors and an air cleaner.
The regulator returns excess fuel to the fuel tank and maintains the pressure at a set level.
This computer fuel management system uses various sensors to provide information to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The ECU uses these input signals to determine how long the injectors (mounted in the throttle body) are open.
Exhaust system
All vehicles are equipped with an exhaust manifold, a front catalytic converter, a rear catalytic converter, a connecting pipe between the two converters, and a main muffler (the rear part of the exhaust pipe and the muffler itself). The exhaust system is suspended under the vehicle and isolated from vibration by several rubber suspension units.
