Galant models up to 1993.
Removal
1. Jack up the car and place it on stands. Remove the corresponding rear wheel.
2. Remove the brake drum/disc (see Chapter Brake system).
3. Remove the hub assembly with the wheel bearing (see Section Removal and installation of hub assemblies).
4. Support the rear axle beam with a jack.
5. Disconnect the lower shock absorber support from the trailing arm.
6. Disconnect the trailing arm from the rear axle beam.
7. Unscrew the through bolt securing the longitudinal arm to the body element and remove the arm assembly from the vehicle.
Installation
1. Place the trailing arm assembly in its regular place and install the through bolt to secure it to the body. Tighten the bolt nut with the required force (100÷120 N·m).
2. Connect the lever to the rear axle beam. Tighten the mounting bolt with a force of 100÷120 N·m.
3. Fasten the lower shock absorber support to the lever, tighten the fastener with a force of 80÷100 N·m).
4. Remove the jack supporting the rear axle beam.
5. Install the hub assembly into place.
6. Install the brake drum/disc (see Chapter Brake system).
7. Install the wheel and lower the car to the ground.
Mirage models since 1993.
Removal
1. Jack up the car and place it on stands. Remove the corresponding rear wheel.
2. Remove the brake drum/disc (see Chapter Brake system).
3. Remove the hub assembly with the wheel bearing (see Section Removal and installation of hub assemblies).
4. Support the rear axle beam with a jack.
5. Disconnect the lower control arm from the trailing arm.
6. Disconnect the upper clamp from the lever.
7. Loosen the through bolt securing the trailing arm to the body element and remove the arm assembly from the vehicle.
Installation
1. Place the trailing arm assembly in its regular place and install the through bolt to secure it to the body. Tighten the bolt nut with the required force (100÷120 N·m).
2. Connect the upper tie to the lever, tighten the fastening bolt with a force of 90 N·m.
3. Connect the lower control arm to the longitudinal arm, tighten the mounting bolt with a force of 90 N·m.
4. Remove the jack supporting the rear axle beam.
5. Install the hub assembly into place.
6. Install the brake drum/disc (see Chapter Brake system).
7. Install the wheel and lower the car to the ground.
Galant models since 1994 and Diamante since 1997.
Removal
1. Jack up the car and place it on stands. Remove the corresponding rear wheel.
2. Support the rear axle beam with a jack.
3. Disconnect the trailing arm from the hub assembly knuckle.
4. Loosen the through bolt securing the trailing arm to the body element and remove the arm assembly from the vehicle.
Installation
1. Place the trailing arm assembly in its regular place and install the through bolt to secure it to the body. Tighten the bolt nut with the required force (137÷157 N·m).
2. Connect the lever to the hub assembly knuckle, tighten the mounting bolt with a force of 118÷137 N·m.
3. Remove the jack supporting the rear axle beam.
4. Install the wheel and lower the car to the ground.
Diamante models 1992÷1996.
Removal
1. Jack up the car and place it on stands. Remove the corresponding rear wheel.
2. Remove the brake drum/disc (see Chapter Brake system).
3. Remove the hub assembly (see Section Removal and installation of hub assemblies).
4. Support the rear axle beam with a jack.
5. Disconnect the lower shock absorber support from the trailing arm.
6. Disconnect the anti-roll bar from the control arm.
7. Disconnect the tie rod end from the lever.
8. Disconnect the lower control arm from the trailing arm.
9. Loosen the through bolt securing the trailing arm to the body element and remove the arm assembly from the vehicle.
Installation
1. Place the trailing arm assembly in its regular place and install the through bolt to secure it to the body. Tighten the bolt nut with the required force (140÷160 N·m).
2. Connect the lower control arm of the suspension to the lever assembly, tighten the mounting bolt with the required force (140÷160 N·m).
3. Connect the tie rod end to the control arm. Tighten the fastening nut to 29 N·m.
4. Install the anti-roll bar onto the lever and tighten the mounting nut to 40 Nm.
5. Connect the shock absorber to the lever. Tighten the mounting bolt to the required torque (90 N·m).
6. Remove the jack supporting the rear axle beam.
7. Install the hub assembly into place.
8. Install the brake drum/disc.
9. Install the wheel and lower the car to the ground.
