Checking the holding winding of the traction relay (Mitsubishi Pajero 4)

1. Disconnect the excitation winding wire from terminal M of the traction relay.

2. Connect the wires from the 12V battery terminals to the S terminal and the starter housing.

Warning: This check must be performed quickly (no more than 10 seconds), to prevent the winding from burning out.

3. Manually extend the drive gear until it stops against the stop ring.

4. If the gear is held in the extended position, then the holding winding is good. If the gear is pulled back, the winding is faulty, so replace the traction relay.
