If a malfunction occurs in any of the following components of the multipoint injection (MPI) system, the engine malfunction indicator lamp in the instrument cluster comes on ("CHECK ENGINE"). If the light remains on even with the engine running, check for fault codes.

The engine malfunction indicator lamp (CHECK ENGINE) lights up if the following components of the fuel injection system are faulty:
  • electronic engine control unit;
  • oxygen concentration sensor;
  • air flow meter sensor;
  • intake manifold air temperature sensor;
  • throttle position sensor;
  • coolant temperature sensor;
  • crankshaft position sensor;
  • camshaft position sensor (DOHC);
  • atmospheric (barometric) pressure sensor;
  • knock sensor;
  • basic ignition timing adjustment mode signal;
  • injectors;
  • ignition coils, power transistor (DOHC);
  • immobilizer systems;
  • electromagnetic vacuum valve (TCL system);
  • electromagnetic atmospheric valve (TCL system).

The article is based on data from the website mitsubishiman.ru

Warning! Engine malfunction indicator lamp ("CHECK ENGINE") will light up even if the ignition advance angle adjustment terminal is shorted to ground. Lighting up of the engine malfunction indicator lamp during the process of setting the basic ignition advance angle is not a sign of a malfunction.
