Mounting elements of the gearbox of early years of production
1 - stretching; 2 - gear shift cables; 3 - clutch cable; 4 - clutch slave cylinder; 5 - electrical wire to the reversing light; 6 - speedometer cable; 7 - starter; 8 - upper mounting bolt; 9 - gearbox bracket.

The gearbox is removed downwards. Therefore, you will need a suitable jack or 4 stands to lower the gearbox.

Removal

Disconnect the ground cable from the battery.

Disconnect the battery only when the ignition is off.

Drain the oil from the gearbox.

Remove the battery and battery holder.

Raise the car.

Remove the lower engine compartment pan.

Press the steering rod joints and axle joints toward the steering knuckles.

Remove the drive shafts from the gearbox.

Secure the removed drive shafts to the body with ropes, as far away from the gearbox housing as possible.

Unscrew the starter mounting bolts and remove it.

Disconnect the speedometer cable.

Disconnect the wire to the reverse light.

Disconnect the gear shift rods.

Remove the clutch slave cylinder.

Remove the clutch basket cover.

Remove the mounting bolts from the bottom of the gearbox.

Support the gearbox with a jack. Move the gearbox away from the engine to the right and lower it to the ground.

Installation

Check the clutch and clutch release bearing.

Clean the input shaft splines and lubricate them.

Insert the gearbox into the engine compartment in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTION: If the gearbox input shaft does not fit into the clutch assembly, turn the crankshaft slightly by the center pulley bolt, but do not force the gearbox in under any circumstances, otherwise you will damage the clutch disc and pressure plate.

Align the gearbox. The guide pins should fit into the holes in the clutch housing.

Insert all mounting bolts and tighten evenly, securing the gearbox to the engine. The tightening force depends on the outer diameter of the bolt.

Tighten the clutch basket cover with a torque of 10 Nm.

Install the drive shafts.

Install the tie rod joints and axle joints.

Install the lower engine oil pan.

Lower the car.

Next, install the starter, screw on the speedometer cable, connect the wire to the reversing light, attach the gear shift rods and install the clutch slave cylinder.

Install the battery.

Fill the gearbox with oil.

Connect the ground wire to the battery.

Check the operation of the gear shift lever, instruments and gauges.

Check the wheel alignment angles.
