Typical elements of the gear shift mechanism of early models
1 - gear shift lever handle; 2 - middle console box; 3 - rear part of the middle console; 4 front part of the middle console; 5 - holder; 6 - gear shift cable; 7 - gear selection cable; 8 - gear shift lever.

All cars reviewed in this publication have a cable-operated gearshift mechanism. In the new gearboxes, the gearshift lever, shift cable, and gear selector cable for cars without a turbocharger have undergone changes. These changes, however, do not affect the principle of gear shifting.

Typical arrangement of levers
1 - neutral; 2 - gear shift lever; 3 - gear selection lever; 4 - gear selection cable.

Adjusting the gear selector cable

Set the gearshift lever to neutral.

After removing the safety pins, remove the shift and gear selection cables from the passenger compartment.

Set the gear shift lever in the passenger compartment to neutral.

Rotate the turnbuckle until the end of the gear selector cable is positioned opposite the gear shift lever inside the vehicle.

Rotate the turnbuckle until the end of the shift cable is positioned opposite the shift lever inside the vehicle.

Connect the gear shift cable and insert a new cotter pin.

Set the gearshift lever to 3rd and then 4th gear. Measure the gap A and then B between the lever and the stop. Turn the tension sleeve until both gaps are the same size.

When engaging all gears, make sure the shift lever moves freely.
