2. Turn the steering wheel in both directions until the wheels begin to move. This free play, measured around the circumference of the steering wheel, is the steering wheel clearance. Permissible value: 30 mm.
3. If the measured backlash of a steering wheel is more than admissible, check up a backlash of a steering shaft and steering draughts.
4. If the clearance is still too large, stop the engine and set the steering wheel to the straight ahead position. Apply a force of 5 N to the outer circumference of the steering wheel and check the clearance again (pic. 13.2). Permissible value (steering wheel clearance with engine off): 10 mm or less.

5. If the backlash is more than admissible, remove the steering mechanism and check up the moment of rotation of a gear wheel.
