1. Failure of the water pump can cause serious engine damage due to overheating.

2. There are three ways to check the water pump without removing it from the engine. If the pump is faulty, it must be replaced with a new or reconditioned one.

3. With the engine running and warmed up to normal operating temperature, squeeze the upper radiator hose. If the water pump is running, you should feel a pressure pulsation when you release the hose.

Warning: Keep your hands away from the fan blades.

4. The water pump is equipped with vent holes. If the pump seal fails, fluid will drain from these holes. In most cases, to locate this hole on the pump body, you will need to use a flashlight and look for signs of a leak under the pump.

8.4 If coolant leaks through the seal (shown by the arrow), the water pump must be replaced

5. If the water pump bearings fail, a whistling noise may be heard at the front of the engine while it is running. Bearing wear can be determined by rocking the water pump pulley up and down. Do not confuse a belt slipping, which causes a whistling noise, with a failing water pump.

8.6 If there is play on the shaft, replace the water pump
