Warning: Allow the engine to cool completely before beginning this procedure.

Removal

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

2. Drain the cooling system (see Chapter 1). If the liquid is relatively new or in good condition, save it for future use.

3. Remove the left engine mount (see Chapter 2, Part A) and loosen the water pump pulley mounting bolts.

9.3 Before removing the drive belts, loosen the water pump pulley mounting bolts

4. Remove the drive belts (see Chapter 1), as well as a pulley from the end of the water pump shaft.

9.4 First loosen bolt B, then unscrew the adjusting bolt (A) and remove the air conditioner belt and the remaining air conditioner bracket bolt (C)

Note: To remove the air conditioner belt, remove the adjustable bracket assembly completely.

5. Remove the timing belt and tensioner (see Chapter 2, Part A).

6. Remove the alternator belt from the water pump.

7. Remove the bolts (see illustration) and disconnect the water pump from the engine. Note the position of the different bolts to ensure correct installation.

9.7a. Remove the mounting bolts (shown by arrows) (SOHC engine)

9.7b. Water Pump Mounting Parts (DOHC Engine)

Installation

8. Clean the bolt threads and threaded holes in the engine from corrosion and sealant.

9. Compare the newly installed pump with the old one - they should be identical.

10. Remove all traces of old gasket material from the engine using a scraper.

11. Clean the mating surfaces of the engine and the new water pump with solvent or acetone.

12. Install a new O-ring into the groove on the front side of the coolant pipe and lubricate the ring with coolant.

13. Apply a thin coat of RTV sealant to the engine side gasket and the sealing surface of the new pump, then carefully install the gasket onto the pump. Insert two bolts into the pump mounting holes to secure the gasket in place.

14. Carefully install the pump with the gasket on the engine and screw the bolts into the holes with finger force. Note that the bolt on the left side of the pump (which secures the alternator bracket) is longer than the other three bolts. Bolts of different lengths must be installed in the corresponding holes of the water pump.

15. Replace the remaining bolts (reinstall the alternator bracket). Tighten the bolts to the torque specified in the specifications in this Chapter in 1/4 turn increments. Do not overtighten them to avoid warping the pump.

16. Reinstall all components that were removed to provide access to the pump.

17. Fill the cooling system with coolant and check the belt tension (see Chapter 1). Start the engine and check the system for leaks.
