Checking the condition of the transmission line (Mitsubishi Galant 6)

1. The propeller shaft is used only on all-wheel drive (AWD) models (among the series under consideration, these are Galant AWD models produced up to 1993) and serves to transmit engine torque to the rear wheels of the vehicle.

2. Jack up the rear of the car and place it on supports, support the front wheels with wheel chocks.

3. Having climbed under the car, visually assess the condition of the cardan shaft. If deformations and cracks are detected, replace the shaft.

4. Check the front and rear ends of the shaft for signs of developing leaks. Replace the appropriate seal(s) if necessary.

5. Without getting out from under the car, ask an assistant to rotate the rear wheels of the car, thereby causing the rotation of the cardan shaft - the joints should turn freely and silently. Assess the condition of the rubber element of the central bearing assembly, replace defective components.

6. The condition of the cardan joints can also be checked with the shaft stationary - firmly grasp each section of the joint and try to rotate them relative to each other - the presence of any noticeable play indicates wear of the internal components of the joint assembly.

7. Finally, assess the reliability of tightening the fastening bolts of the connecting flange and the central bearing assembly.

8. On all-wheel drive models, assess the condition of the front propeller shaft in a similar manner. Check the shafts for leaks through the sliding clutch seals.

9. While you are at it, also check the drive shafts/axles of the drive wheels for signs of leaks. Assess the condition of the protective boots of the constant velocity joints. If necessary, replace the differential seals.
