Adjusting valve clearances on a diesel engine

To ensure access to the valves, preliminary work must be carried out. This mainly concerns the removal of the upper timing belt guard and the cylinder head cover. The set value for the clearances of the intake and exhaust valves is 0.25 mm.

1. Unscrew the upper protective cover of the toothed belt. The casing is secured with four bolts on the front side. Pull the housing forward and pass it under the water hose.
2. Disconnect the engine crankcase ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover and the boost enrichener pressure hose from the high-pressure fuel pump.
3. Release the throttle cable from the clamp on the cylinder head cover and set it aside without bending it.
4. Loosen the cylinder head cover bolts and remove the cover. In this case, the semicircular sealing insert from the rear side of the cylinder head should not fall out.
5. Turn the crankshaft until the piston of the first cylinder is in the top dead center position. In this case, the mark on the toothed pulley of the camshaft and the triangular mark on the upper part of the timing mechanism housing must match, as shown in the figure Position of the mark on the camshaft toothed pulley.
6. With the engine in this position, adjust the clearances of the following valves:
intake and exhaust valves of the first cylinder, intake valve of the second cylinder, exhaust valve of the third cylinder.
7. After this, turn the engine one revolution and adjust the clearances of the following valves: the exhaust valve of the second cylinder, the intake valve of the third cylinder, the intake and exhaust valves of the fourth cylinder. When adjusting, use a spanner, screwdriver or feeler gauge of the appropriate thickness. Place the tools as shown in the picture Adjusting valve clearances on a diesel engine. The valves on a diesel engine are arranged, starting from the side with the water hose, in the following order: exhaust valve, inlet valve, and so on in the same order up to the fourth cylinder.
