Removal
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Drain the coolant from the engine cooling system.
3. Remove the timing belt.
4. Using a special device, fix the camshaft pulley from turning, unscrew the bolt and remove the camshaft pulley.

5. Unscrew the bolts and remove the upper rear cover 2 (Fig. 4.17) of the timing belt.
6. Remove the camshaft oil seal 3.
7. Unscrew the nuts and remove the cylinder head cover 10.
8. Loosen the clamp and remove the upper radiator hose 18.
9. Loosen the bolts and remove the cooling system inlet pipe 20.
10. Loosen the bolts and remove the vacuum pump 16 and gasket 15.
11. Unscrew the bolts in several stages and remove bearing caps 5–9 of the camshaft sequentially.
12. Remove camshaft 14.
13. Remove key 4 from the camshaft.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
1. Apply a layer of engine oil to the bearing journals and camshaft lobes.
2. Place the camshaft in the bearing surfaces of the cylinder head.

3. Before installing the front and rear camshaft bearing caps, apply a thin layer of Mitsubishi Genuine Part MD970389 or equivalent sealant to the mating surfaces of the caps (Fig. 4.18).
4. Apply a thin layer of engine oil to the working lip of the oil seal.
5. Wipe the camshaft oil seal seating surface.
6. Install the oil seal on the camshaft.
7. Press the seal into place using a special tool.
8. Fill the engine cooling system with coolant.
9. Install the timing belt of the gas distribution mechanism.
