Front crankshaft oil seal
Removal
1. Remove the timing belt.

2. Remove pulley 1 (Fig. 4.23) of the crankshaft and key 2.
3. Drill two small holes in the front crankshaft oil seal, located at diametrically opposite ends of the oil seal. Screw two self-tapping screws into the drilled holes in the oil seal and use pliers to pull out oil seal 3 by the screw heads.
4. Clean the oil seal seat.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
1. Lubricate the working lip of the oil seal with a small amount of engine oil.
2. Install the special tool MB996040 (guide) onto the crankshaft nose.
3. Install the seal on the guide.
4. Using special tool MB996040, install the oil seal into place.
5. Remove all traces of engine oil and install the crankshaft pulley.
Rear crankshaft oil seal
Removal
To remove the rear crankshaft oil seal, perform the following operations sequentially.
1. Remove the gearbox assembly.
2. Remove the clutch housing and clutch driven disc.
3. After installing a special tool on the flywheel ring gear, secure the flywheel or torque converter drive plate from turning, unscrew the bolts and remove the flywheel.
4. Drill two small holes in the rear crankshaft oil seal, located at diametrically opposite ends of the oil seal. Screw two self-tapping screws into the drilled holes in the oil seal and pull the oil seal out using the screw heads with pliers.
5. Clean the oil seal seat.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
1. Lubricate the entire working edge of the oil seal with a small amount of engine oil.
2. Install the special tool (guide) on the crankshaft end.
3. Install the seal on the guide.
4. Before installation, clean the mounting bolts, threaded holes in the crankshaft and flywheel from oil, sealant and other contaminants.
5. Apply 3M STUD Locking 4170 or similar sealant to the threads of the mounting bolt holes.
6. Using the same special tool as for removal, secure the flywheel or torque converter drive plate and tighten the mounting bolts to 53 N·m.
