Removal

  • Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
  • Remove the air filter.
  • Remove the ignition distributor.
  • Remove the timing belt of the gas distribution mechanism drive.
  • Disconnect the PCV hose from the fitting on the cylinder head cover.
  • Remove the bolts and clamps holding the accelerator cable.
  • Remove the bolts and remove the cylinder head cover.
  • Using special tools MB990767 and MD998719 or MD998754, block the camshaft pulley from turning and unscrew the pulley mounting bolt (Fig. 3.20). Remove the pulley from the camshaft.
  • Using a knife or a flat-head screwdriver, make a groove near the working edge of the seal.

Warning: Be careful not to damage the camshaft and cylinder head.

  • Insert a flat-head screwdriver blade wrapped in cloth into the punched groove and, using the screwdriver as a lever, remove the seal.
  • Loosen and then remove the intake valve rocker arm shaft mounting bolt, then remove the entire assembly together with the bolt, which should remain with the assembly.
