Fig. 6.1. Functional diagram of the direct fuel injection system into the engine cylinders (GDI) of a car manufactured since 1999

If a malfunction occurs in any of the following components of the direct fuel injection system, the engine malfunction indicator lamp comes on ("CHECK ENGINE") (Fig. 6.2).

Fig. 6.2. Location of the engine malfunction indicator lamp

If the light remains on while the engine is running, check for a fault code.

Engine Malfunction Indicator Lamp ("CHECK ENGINE") lights up when faults occur in the following system elements:
  • electronic engine control unit;
  • oxygen concentration sensor;
  • air flow meter;
  • intake manifold air temperature sensor;
  • throttle position sensor (channel 1);
  • throttle position sensor (2nd channel);
  • coolant temperature sensor;
  • crankshaft position sensor;
  • camshaft position sensor;
  • atmospheric (barometric) pressure sensor;
  • knock sensor fuel injectors;
  • in case of fuel combustion process disturbance;
  • immobilizer;
  • at abnormal fuel pressure;
  • brake system vacuum sensor;
  • malfunction of the fuel system;
  • accelerator pedal position sensor (1st channel);
  • accelerator pedal position sensor (2nd channel);
  • electronic throttle control system;
  • throttle actuator;
  • throttle position control valve.

Emergency Operation Reference Table

When the self-diagnostic system detects a malfunction of one of the main sensors, the system switches to emergency control mode (FAIL SAFE FUNCTION), so that the vehicle can continue moving (to the service station).
