General information about adjustment (Mitsubishi Galant 5)

The term "adjustment" is used in this manual to refer to a combination of individual operations rather than one specific procedure.

If the periodic maintenance schedule has been strictly followed since the vehicle was purchased new, with frequent checks of fluid levels and wear parts in accordance with this manual, the engine will be in relatively good working order, so the need for additional work will be minimal.

The most likely periods when the engine runs poorly are due to poor periodic maintenance. This is especially possible if you have purchased a used car that has not been well and regularly serviced. In such cases, in addition to periodic maintenance at the specified intervals, it is necessary to perform an engine adjustment.

The first step in any adjustment or diagnostics is to check the compression in the engine cylinders (see Chapter 2). Compression testing will help determine the condition of the internal engine components, and its results can be used as input for adjustment and repair. For example, if a compression test reveals severe internal engine wear, then a regular adjustment will not improve engine performance. Since compression testing is an important procedure, it should be performed by a person with sufficient experience and the appropriate equipment.

Listed below are the procedures most commonly used to restore the engine to normal operating condition.
