Removal
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the high tension wire from the distributor cap.
3. Disconnect the vacuum hose(s) from the vacuum advance valve (if equipped).
4. Locate the "1" mark on the distributor cap (see illustration). This mark indicates the tip of the spark plug wire for the first cylinder. If there is no such mark on the cap, locate the spark plug for the first cylinder and use the wire to determine the position of the tip on the cap.
5. Remove the distributor cap (see Chapter 1), turn the engine so that the rotor points to the tip of the spark plug wire of the first cylinder (see the procedure for determining the top dead center position in Chapter 2).
6. Place a mark on the rib of the distributor base just below the tip of the rotor in line with it (see illustration). Also place a mark on the distributor base and engine block to mark the position of the distributor and rotor for reinstallation.
8.6 Before removing the distributor, paint or scratch an alignment mark on the edge of the distributor base just below the tip of the rotor; do not use a lead pencil.
7. Unscrew the nut and washer securing the distributor, then remove the distributor.
Warning: Do not turn the crankshaft after removing the distributor, otherwise the alignment marks will be knocked off.
8. Disconnect the primary coil wire from the distributor.
Installation
Note: If the crankshaft has been moved with the distributor removed, determine the top dead center position for the piston of cylinder number one. When turning the crankshaft, compression pressure should be felt in the hole of spark plug number one. Having felt the compression, align the top dead center marks on the drive belt pulley and timing belt cover.

9. Install the distributor on the engine in exactly the same position relative to the block as before removal.
10. It may be necessary to rotate the rotor slightly to install the helical gears onto the camshaft and distributor. Check the alignment marks on the distributor base and block to ensure the distributor is positioned correctly. Also check the rotor position against the mark on the edge of the distributor base.
11. Tighten the nut.
12. Connect the electrical wires.
13. Install the distributor cap.
14. Connect the vacuum hose(s) to the vacuum advance valve (if equipped).
15. Connect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs (if removed).
16. Connect the negative battery cable.
17. Check the ignition timing (see Chapter 1), then tighten the distributor mounting nut securely.
