2. Check the connection of the wire to the terminal for cracks, corrosion, and unraveling of the wires at the ends. The presence of a white or green loose coating under the insulation at the point of connection to the terminal is a signal that the wire is corroded or needs to be replaced. Check the terminals for deformation, corrosion, and the presence of mounting bolts.
3. When disconnecting wires, always disconnect the negative wire first (see section 2), and connect it last, otherwise a short circuit may occur when using a tool to loosen the wire clamps. Even if you are replacing only the positive cable, you must disconnect the negative cable first. (For more information on removing battery cables, see see Chapter 1).
4. Disconnect the old wires from the battery, then go along each wire to its end, disconnect the wires from the starter solenoid and ground. Note the route of the wire so as not to make a mistake when installing the new wires.
5. When replacing one or both old battery cables, take them with you to the store. It is important to replace the cables with identical ones. The cables have simple distinguishing features: the positive cable is usually red, has a larger cross-section and a larger terminal clamp diameter, the negative cable is usually green, has a smaller cross-section and a slightly smaller terminal clamp diameter.
6. Clean the threads of the starter solenoid and/or ground terminals with a wire brush to remove rust and corrosion. Apply a thin coat of battery terminal corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly to the threads to prevent further corrosion.
7. Connect the wire to the solenoid and/or ground and tighten the fastening securely.
8. Before connecting the new cable to the battery, make sure the cable is long enough and not stretched.
9. Connect the positive wire first, then the negative wire.
