Warning: Checking and repairing exhaust system components should be done after the engine has been turned off, sufficient time for the system to cool completely. In addition, when working under the machine, ensure that it is securely supported on stands.

1. The exhaust system consists of the exhaust manifold(s), catalytic converter, muffler, tailpipe and connecting pipes, brackets, suspension units and clamps. The exhaust system is attached to the body by brackets and rubber suspension units (see illustration). If these parts are damaged or worn, excessive vibration and noise will be transmitted to the body.

17.1 Whenever the vehicle is raised, even if you do not plan to service the exhaust system, inspect and, if necessary, replace the rubber suspension components (Precis model shown) of the system.

2. Regular inspection of the exhaust system will ensure safe and quiet operation. Make sure there are no damaged or bent parts, open seams, holes, loose connections, severe corrosion or other defects that could allow exhaust gases to enter the passenger compartment. Worn exhaust system components should not be repaired; they need to be replaced with new ones.

3. If the exhaust system components are heavily damaged by corrosion or rust, you may need welding equipment to remove them. The most convenient way is to cut the part with an oxyacetylene torch in a specialized workshop. However, if you want to save money and do the work yourself (and you do not have an oxyacetylene torch), cut the part with a hacksaw. If you have access to compressed air, you can use a special pneumatic chisel. When doing the work yourself, use protective glasses and gloves.

4. Below are some tips for repairing the exhaust system:
  • a) Repair the exhaust system from the rear to the front.
  • b) To facilitate unscrewing the fastening units (see illustration), apply penetrating lubricant to them.
  • c) When installing new exhaust system components, use new gaskets, suspension units and clamps.
  • d) During assembly, apply a non-stick compound to the threads of the fastening elements.
  • d) Ensure sufficient clearance between newly installed parts and body parts to prevent overheating of the rear panels and possible damage to the mats and insulation. Pay particular attention to the catalytic converter and its heat shield.

5. To replace the front mounted catalytic converter, refer to Chapter 2A and remove the exhaust manifold and neutralizer assembly. Then unscrew the neutralizer from the manifold, install in the reverse order.
