Removing
1. Remove the clutch slave cylinder assembly (see Section Removal and installation of the clutch slave cylinder).
2. Remove the gearbox (see chapter Manual transmission).
3. Remove the clutch release lever holder from the spherical bearing ball pin.
4. Try to remember how the fingers of the release lever are attached to the release bearing with a spring retainer. Remove the bearing from the lever assembly, then from the gearbox input shaft trunnion. Remove the clutch release lever. evaluate the condition of the rubber protective cover of the lever, if necessary, replace the boot. Assess the condition of the lever wire holder, replace if necessary. Check the clutch release lever for cracks and signs of deformation.
Examination
Holding the bearing by the outer race, press the inner race with two fingers and rotate it. The bearing must rotate freely and silently, otherwise it must be replaced. Wipe the bearing with a clean rag and inspect for signs of wear, cracks or other mechanical damage. The release bearing is usually replaced every time the clutch components are serviced. Under no circumstances should the bearing be washed in solvent in order to prevent leakage of its assembly.
Installation
1. Lubricate the contact surfaces of the clutch release lever with refractory grease. If necessary, seat a new spring holder in place. Pack grease into the inner groove of the release bearing. Also lubricate the bearing holder on the input shaft journal.
2. Install the release bearing on the release lever assembly, - make sure that the components are securely fixed.
3. Lubricate the surface of the ball stud of the spherical lever seat with refractory grease, thread the lever through the boot, seat the bearing on the shaft journal, then snap the lever onto the support pin. Check the freedom of movement of the bearing on the shaft journal.
4. Lightly lubricate the release bearing contacting surface of the release bearing with high temperature grease.
5. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order to the dismantling of the components. Make sure the transmission-to-engine mounting bolts are tightened to the correct torque (see Specifications to Chapter Manual transmission).
