Check the following dimensions:
  • 1. Axial play
  • 2. Clearances in bearing journals
  • 3. cam size

The axial clearance is checked either before removing the camshaft or during installation, with the belt (chain) removed. The clearance is checked with a pointer micrometer. On an engine with a removable thrust cover, the clearance is checked with a feeler gauge. If the clearance is increased, replace the thrust cover. If the play is still large, replace the camshaft.

The clearance in the bearing journals is checked by crushing a plastic gauge between the journal and the cover. The covers and journals must be thoroughly cleaned of oil, the bolts tightened to the specified torque with the camshaft stationary.

If the measured gaps and dimensions do not correspond to the norm, then replace the camshaft.
