Camshaft and camshaft oil seal (Mitsubishi Carisma)

Removal



1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Drain the coolant from the engine cooling system.

3. Remove the air filter.

4. Remove the timing belt.

5. Using special tools MB990767 and MD998719, secure the camshaft pulley from turning, unscrew the bolt and remove the camshaft pulley.

6. Loosen the bolts and remove the upper rear cover 3 (Fig. 5.6) of the timing belt.

7. Remove the camshaft oil seal 4.

8. Loosen the clamp and remove the brake booster vacuum hose 13.

9. Remove vacuum hose 12.

10. Loosen the bolts and remove the vacuum pump 14.

11. Loosen the bolts, remove the cylinder head cover 9 and gasket 7.



12. Loosen the clamp and remove the upper radiator hose 16.

13. Loosen the bolts and remove the inlet pipe 17 of the cooling system.

14. Gradually, in several steps, unscrew the bolts and remove the camshaft cover 11.

15. Remove camshaft 5.

16. Remove key 6 from the camshaft.

Installation



Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.

1. Apply a layer of engine oil to the bearing journals and camshaft lobes.

2. Place the camshaft in the bearing surfaces of the cylinder head.

3. Install the camshaft cover and tighten the cover mounting bolts to a torque of 10 N·m in the sequence shown in Fig. 5.7.

4. Apply a thin layer of engine oil to the working lip of the oil seal.

5. Wipe the camshaft oil seal seating surface.

6. Install the oil seal on the camshaft.

7. Using special tool MB996042, install the oil seal into place.

8. Apply a layer of sealant to the cylinder head cover where the gasket is installed and install the cover (Fig. 5.8).

9. Secure the camshaft pulley from turning as when removing it; tighten the pulley mounting bolt to a torque of 50 Nm.
