1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Working in the engine compartment, remove the air cleaner assembly (if this will make access easier), then disconnect the shift lever cable from the bracket and from the transmission lever.
5.2. The selector lever cable is attached to the lever on the gearbox using a cotter pin and washers, and to the bracket using a spring clip or two large nuts (one on the other side of the bracket)
3. Raise the vehicle and place it on stable supports.
4. Working under the vehicle, unscrew the mounting nuts and bolts of the selector lever cable.
5. Unscrew the bolts and nuts securing the gear shift lever.

6. Working inside the vehicle, remove the selector lever knob and center console. Disconnect the selector cable and remove the selector lever assembly (see Illustrations 5.5a - 5.5g).
7. Remove the selector cable from under the vehicle.
Installation
8. Install the selector lever assembly. Securely tighten the mounting bolts or nuts.
9. Refit the selector cable and connect it to the gearbox and selector lever. On early models, check that the toothed washer on the gearbox mounting bracket is correctly positioned.
Adjustment
10. Move the lever to neutral position.
11. Turn the lever adjusting plunger to obtain the required plunger-to-lever end clearance. Make sure that the beveled surface of the plunger faces the driver's side after adjustment (see illustration). Apply a small amount of multi-purpose grease to the outer edge and beveled surface of the plunger.
5.11. To obtain the required clearance (indicated at the beginning of this Chapter), turn the mode selector lever towards the end of the lever (A); most models have a beveled edge (B) on the plunger that should face the driver's side after adjustment
12. Install the gear selector panel and knob.
13. If necessary, remove slack from the gear selector cable by turning the adjusting nuts on the gear shift lever (see Illustrations 5.5a and 5.5g).
14. Check the engagement of all gears (try to start the engine in each gear - the starter should only work in the Park and Neutral positions). If necessary, adjust the neutral sensor (see section 7).
