Drum brakes
Adjustment of the drum brakes is required only when the pads are replaced or the pad adjusters are faulty.
1. To adjust the clearance between the shoes and drums, remove the drums.
2. Unscrew the pad adjuster sprocket until the outer diameter of the pads is 253.0–253.5 mm.
3. Put on the drums and press the brake pedal and the handbrake lever several times - it should feel approximately the same "rigidity" levers and pedals.

Pedal height adjustment by turning the stem
1. Down; 2. Up; 3. Locknut
1. Check the distance from the pedal to the floor of the body (remove the rug), which should be 191–196 mm (1983-91) or 186–191 mm (1992-98).
2. Adjust the pedal height by rotating the stem with the stem and switch locknuts released.
3. Tighten the stem jam nut, then set the gap between the end of the switch and the pedal to 0.5–1.0 mm and tighten the switch lock nut.
4. Check the pedal free play by depressing the pedal several times with the engine stopped and measuring the stroke until you feel a slight resistance, which should be 3–8 mm.
5. If the stroke is less than specified, then check the adjustment of the switch, if more, then check the wear of the axle and pedal lever.
6. Start the engine, press the pedal with a force of 50 kgf and measure the distance from the pedal to the floor, which should be 95 mm (1983-91) or 100 mm (1992-98).
7. If this distance is greater than the specified, then the causes are air ingress, fluid leakage or breakage of the shoe adjuster.
