Regardless of whether the head has been repaired in a workshop or not, make sure that it is absolutely clean before installing it on the engine.

If you received it from repair after valve maintenance, then the valves and related components are already installed in place, and if not, then:
  • Install the valve back in its original place.
  • Install the spring seat, spring oil seal and upper plate.

Valve mounting elements
1 - saddle; 2 - oil deflector cap; 3 - top plate; 4 - spring.

Install the fixture and compress the valve springs until the valve groove is visible.

Place crackers on the upper groove of the valve and release the springs by releasing the device.

Tap the valve plate with a rubber mallet to loosen the crackers.

Repeat the above procedure for all other valves. Be sure to install all components in their original places and do not mix them up!

Check the installed height of the valve springs using a special ruler or measuring device. If the head was repaired in a workshop, the installed height of the springs should correspond to the required value (however, check this again). The measurement is made from the top of each spring seat to the bottom of the mount. If the height value does not correspond to the required value, additional washers must be installed.

Be careful, the camshafts have different designs, do not mix them up.

Identification marks of 8-valve engines
1 - exhaust cam No.4; 2 - exhaust cam No.3; A - engines 4G13, 4G15B (early models); B - engines 4G13, 4G13; B - engine 4G13 (version).

Distinctive features of camshafts of a 6-cylinder engine

Lubricate the shaft journals with engine oil and install the shafts in place.

Position the camshafts correctly in their beds.

4-cylinder engines D0HC
1 - pins.

6-cylinder engines 6A12 (D0HC)

Install the bearing caps according to the numbers and marks.

Install the axles with rocker arms.

Tighten the mounting bolts in three stages to a torque of 20 Nm.

Identification marks of camshaft caps
1 — mark "front of engine"; 2 — camshaft cover number; 3 — identification symbol (I — intake camshaft; E - exhaust camshaft).

Sequence of tightening the bolts for fastening the camshaft bearing caps

Check the axial play of the camshaft/s.

Install new seals.

Engines without hydraulic lifters: adjust valve clearances.

Install the cylinder head cover/s, having first coated the spherical areas of the cover with a thin layer of sealant.

Install an oil pressure monitoring sensor (not all engines).
