CAUTION: The procedure for removing the cylinder head on an engine removed from a vehicle involves removing all external engine components that prevent removal of the cylinder head.
If they have not been removed, remove the toothed wheels and the camshaft drive belt(s), having first aligned the timing marks on the toothed wheels (see chapter "Engine repair without removing it from the car").
Remove all engine components and switching elements.
Loosen the bolts securing the rear timing belt cover to the cylinder head.
Remove the cylinder head cover.
Loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts in the reverse order shown, in 2-3 steps.
Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence
1.3L engines; 1.5 l; 1.6 l (8 valves)
Engines 1.6 l (16-valve); 1.8L (SOHC)
Engines 2.0L (DOHC)
Engines V6 2.0L (DOHC)
Loosen the bolts one by one by a quarter of a turn until you can unscrew them by hand. Work in strict sequence so as not to damage the surface of the head. Mark the position of each bolt so that when installing them, you can return them to their original places.
Remove the head from the engine. If you feel resistance, do not try to pry it off using a lever inserted between the contact surfaces of the head and block.
Place the head on a wooden surface to protect the gasket contact surface.
