Checking the clutch (Mitsubishi Colt 4)

It is impossible to detect wear of the driven disk in the installed state; the first indication of this is slippage of the clutch. A slipping clutch is noticeable when driving in top gear under load. The engine speed is high, but the vehicle speed does not increase equally. The following methods can be used to check.

Is the clutch slipping?

Apply the parking brake and start the engine.

Shift into third gear, slowly engage the clutch and give it gas. If the parking brake is working properly, the engine should stall.

If it works, then it is necessary to check the free travel of the clutch pedal and, if necessary, adjust it.

Repeat the test. If the engine can still run, then a more serious repair is needed.

Is the clutch disengaging properly?

If the gearbox shifts with difficulty when the engine is warmed up or the shifting process is accompanied by a crackling and rattling noise, then the clutch is probably not disengaging correctly. Much less often, this effect is caused by a gearbox malfunction. In order to verify this, it is necessary to check with the reverse gear.

Allow the engine to idle.

Fully depress the clutch pedal, wait about 3 seconds, then try to engage reverse gear.

If the engine makes a crackling noise, the clutch is not fully disengaged - the driven disk does not rotate freely.

Check the drive, adjust, remove air.
