Caution: On fuel injected models, do not disconnect the fuel lines until the fuel system has been relieved of pressure (see Chapter 4).
1. If you smell gasoline while driving or after a long period of parking in the sun, check the fuel system immediately.
2. Remove the fuel filler cap and check for corrosion or damage. The gasket should have an undamaged sealing surface. If the gasket is damaged, replace the cap.
3. Check the integrity of the fuel supply line and return pipes. Check the tightness of the connecting fittings of the metal fuel pipes.
4. Since some components of the fuel system - such as the fuel tank and some fuel lines - are located underneath the vehicle, they will be easier to inspect if the vehicle is raised on a lift. If this is not possible, support the vehicle on jack stands.
5. With the vehicle lifted and on stable supports, inspect the fuel tank and filler pipe for corrosion, cracks, or other damage. The connection between the filler pipe and the fuel tank is especially important. Sometimes the rubber filler pipe leaks due to loose clamps or aging rubber. These problems can usually be fixed yourself.

Warning: Do not repair the fuel tank under any circumstances (except rubber parts). Gas welding or open flame can easily cause an explosion of fuel vapors accumulated inside the fuel tank.
6. Carefully check all rubber and metal pipes coming from the fuel tank. Check the tightness of the fasteners, the cleanliness of the hoses, the absence of deformation of the pipes and other defects. Carefully inspect the pipes coming from the tank to the carburetor. If necessary, repair or replace the damaged section.
