Idle speed is adjusted only on carbureted engines to compensate for engine wear, or after disassembling the carburetor. This procedure is not mandatory for maintenance.
On injection engines, the speed is automatically regulated and is set only when replacing the fuel system units.
Idle speed and ignition timing are recommended to be adjusted together with subsequent mutual adjustment.
Carburetor engines
Adjustment
Attention! The throttle opening angle is factory set.
Attention! The damper adjusting screw is closed with a plug, which should only be cracked when repairing the carburetor. Otherwise, the accuracy of other adjustments is violated, efficiency decreases and the converter resource decreases.
1. Switch off all onboard consumers.
2. Connect the stroboscope and tachometer.
3. Set the transmission to neutral and turn off the cooling fan.
4. Warm up the engine. On cars 1987-89. depress the throttle pedal to turn off fast idle.
Attention! Monitor the temperature of the engine, in case of overheating, stop.
5. Check the ignition setting, adjust if necessary.
6. Check up turns of idling. Adjust if necessary by turning the SAS1 screw next to the primary chamber throttle.
Injection engines
These engines are equipped with an automatic idle stabilization system (ISC system). To check the idle speed setting, do the following.
Examination
1. Switch off all onboard consumers. Set the transmission to neutral.
2. Start the engine, stop after a few minutes.
3. Insert a paper clip into the engine speed sensor connector on the wiring side (connected between the primary winding of the coil and the filter) and connect a tachometer to the paper clip.
4. Start the engine. Check ignition timing, adjust if necessary.
5. Increase the speed to 2000-3000 rpm, after 5 seconds, switch the engine to idle. After 2 minutes, check the tachometer readings.
Diesel
Examination
1. Switch off all onboard consumers. Set the transmission to neutral.
2. Start the engine, stop after a few minutes.
3. Connect diesel tachometer.
4. Increase the speed to 2000-3000 rpm, after 5 seconds, switch the engine to idle. After 2 minutes, check the tachometer readings.
5. Adjust if necessary by loosening the locknut and turning the screw. Tighten locknut when finished.
