Engine Speed Sensor Connector on 2.4L and 3.0L Engine

Idle speed is adjusted only on carburetor engines to compensate for engine wear, or after disassembling the carburetor. This procedure is not mandatory for maintenance.

On injection engines, the speed is regulated automatically and is set only when replacing fuel system units.

It is recommended to adjust idle speed and ignition timing together with subsequent mutual adjustment.

Carburetor engines



Adjustment



Attention! The throttle opening angle is set at the factory.


Attention! The damper adjustment screw is covered with a plug, which should only be broken off in case of carburetor repair. Otherwise, the accuracy of other adjustments is disrupted, efficiency drops and the service life of the neutralizer is reduced.


1. Turn off all on-board consumers.

2. Connect the stroboscope and tachometer.

3. Place the transmission in neutral and turn off the cooling fan.

4. Warm up the engine. On 1987-89 vehicles, press the throttle pedal to disengage fast idle.

Attention! Monitor the engine temperature, stop if it overheats.


5. Check the ignition timing and adjust if necessary.

6. Check the idle speed. If necessary, adjust by turning the SAS1 screw next to the primary chamber throttle valve.

Injection engines



These engines are equipped with an automatic idle speed control system (ISC system). To check the idle speed setting, do the following.

Examination



1. Turn off all on-board consumers. Place the transmission in neutral.

2. Start the engine, stop it after a few minutes.

3. Insert a paper clip into the engine speed sensor connector on the wiring side (connected between the primary winding of the coil and the filter) and connect the tachometer to the paper clip.



4. Start the engine. Check the ignition timing and adjust if necessary.

5. Increase the speed to 2000–3000 rpm, after 5 seconds switch the engine to idle. After 2 minutes, check the tachometer readings.

Diesel



Examination



1. Turn off all on-board consumers. Place the transmission in neutral.

2. Start the engine, stop it after a few minutes.

3. Connect the diesel tachometer.

4. Increase the speed to 2000–3000 rpm, after 5 seconds switch the engine to idle. After 2 minutes, check the tachometer readings.

5. If necessary, adjust by loosening the lock nut and turning the screw. When finished, tighten the lock nut.
