1. Driver's airbag; 2. Front passenger airbag; 3. SRS control unit with shock sensor; 4. Seat belt pretensioners
5. Side airbags; 6. Side impact sensors
The airbags will only activate when the ignition key is turned to the ON or START position.
When the key in the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, the airbag warning lamp lights up in the instrument cluster. If the system is functioning normally, the airbag warning light will go out after a few seconds.
The airbag system is not a replacement for seat belts, but is part of the vehicle's overall passive safety concept, so seat belts must always be fastened correctly.
The front airbags, in combination with the seat belts, cushion the force of an impact to the head and upper body, reducing the risk of serious injury. However, a bursting front airbag can injure the face and cause other minor injuries. Front airbags do not protect the lower body.
The front airbags are designed to inflate in severe frontal impacts, however they may inflate if the forces in another type of impact are similar to those in a higher impact severity. They may also fail to open in some minor frontal collisions. Car damage (or lack thereof) does not always activate the airbag system.
When the airbag deploys, a loud pop is heard, accompanied by the release of smoke. This smoke is not harmful and does not indicate a fire. However, take care not to inhale this smoke, as it can irritate your respiratory tract. If inhalation of smoke nevertheless occurs, it is necessary to immediately move to fresh air.
After deployment, the airbag deflates and as a result, the forward view is again freed.
Side airbags are designed to deploy in the event of severe side impacts, with the airbags only deploying on the side from which the impact occurred.
Side airbags are installed in the backrests of the driver's and front passenger's seats, respectively, on the left and right sides of the backrests, as indicated by the plate.
The side airbags are not designed to deploy in certain low speed side impacts, rollovers, rear impacts and frontal collisions.
Side airbags may not deploy in certain side impacts, even if that side of the vehicle is damaged. This failure does not indicate a malfunction, but is due to the fact that the forces of the side impact were not large enough to actuate this system.
Warnings!
- (1) Do not place any objects on the steering wheel airbag or instrument panel. Also, do not place any objects between the driver and the steering wheel or the passenger and the instrument panel. Such objects can become sources of danger when the airbag deploys.
- (2) The airbag components will be very hot immediately after deployment, so do not touch them to avoid burns.
- (3) When the front airbag deploys, the windshield may be shattered.
- (4) Do not hang hangers or other hard objects on hooks. In the event of an accident, a foreign object may be thrown by the deploying airbag and injure the driver or passengers.
- (5) If the airbags have deployed, the deployed airbag will no longer function and must be replaced by a Mitsubishi dealer. Also, if the front airbag has deployed, the pretensioner seat belt must also be replaced, as they cannot be restored.
- (6) Do not use seat covers fitted with SRS side airbags as they will prevent the airbags from deploying properly.
