Removing
1. Set piston N1 to TDC.
2. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.
3. Drain the coolant from the cooling system and remove the spark plugs.
4. Remove the intake manifold
5. Remove the exhaust manifold
6. Remove the distributor.
7. In carburetor type engines, remove the fuel pump.
8. Remove the timing belt
9. Remove the valve cover
12.10 Sequence of unscrewing the cylinder head bolts (flip the picture if the asterisk is on the other side)
1. 8mm hex wrench; 2. Gas distribution belt; 3. Inlet valves; 4. Exhaust valves
10. Using an 8mm hex wrench, loosen the cylinder head bolts in the order shown (12.10) one-fourth of a turn each, until they can no longer be unscrewed by hand.
12.11 Pry up the head with the lever
11. Remove the head and place it on wooden stands to avoid damaging the mating surface. If the head is too tight, tap it with a wooden mallet or pry with a lever (12.11).
12.12 Clean the remnants of the old gasket from the mating surfaces of the head and cylinder block
12. Clean off the remnants of the old gasket from the mating surfaces of the head and cylinder block (12.12).
Installation
Attention! On 1993 Galant SOHC and DOHC engines, check the length of the cylinder head bolt studs. If it exceeds 99.4 mm, replace the bolts.
12.13b Identification mark must be directed upwards and must be located on the side of the sprocket
12.13a Install a new gasket, the dowel pins are indicated by arrows (1.5 l)
13. Install a new gasket (12.13a) and put the head back (12.13b).
12.14 Cylinder head bolt tightening sequence
14. The cylinder head bolts must be tightened in several steps in the required order (12.14).
15. Install the timing belt.
16. Install remaining parts
17. Fill coolant and check all fluid levels. Rotate the crankshaft two full turns, check the timing marks.
18. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature. Check the engine for leaks. Stop the engine, remove the valve cover and tighten the cylinder head bolts.
