1 - ignition wire; 2 - ignition distributor; 3 - cylinder head cover; 4 - toothed belt; 5 - gear camshaft; 6 - oil seal; 7, 8 - rocker arm block; 9 - back cover; 10 - gasket; 11 - thrust flange; 1 - bushing; 13 - camshaft.


Removal



Remove the air filter.

Disconnect ignition wire 1 from the distributor cap and remove the ignition distributor (2) (if equipped).

Remove the fuel pump.

Unscrew the cylinder head cover (3).

Remove the timing belt (4).

Loosen the camshaft gear mounting bolt, holding the gear and camshaft from turning. To lock the latter, insert a screwdriver from the side under the rocker shaft so that the shaft pin rests against the screwdriver when unscrewing the bolt, or lock the camshaft gear with a rod from the front. To do this, insert a screwdriver into the gear hole and rest it against the top of the cylinder head. Remove the gear.

Remove the seal (6).

Unscrew and remove the rocker arm assembly (7 and 8). But first loosen the valve clearance adjustment screws. Loosen all rocker arm axle mounting bolts by 1/2 turn, and then unscrew.



Some engines require a number of additional works.

Unscrew the back cover (9) and remove it with the gasket (1).

According to the figure, unscrew the bolt, thrust flange (11) and camshaft thrust bearing housing through the hole in the cylinder head.

Pull the camshaft out through the hole in the cylinder head on the transmission side.

Installation



ATTENTION: The camshafts have distinctive marks! Do not mix up the shafts when installing.

Wash all parts in gasoline and clean mating surfaces.

Check the axial clearance of the camshaft: insert a feeler gauge between the thrust bearing housing and the camshaft. Permissible value: 0.0510.20 mm, limit value 0.4 mm.

Lubricate the camshaft and insert it into the cylinder head.

Early models of the car


  • Insert the camshaft with the thrust bearing housing into the cylinder head. The threaded hole in the camshaft thrust bearing housing should be at the top. Align the threaded hole with the bolt hole on the cylinder head. Insert the bolt into the hole and tighten it.
  • Screw on the back cover with a new gasket.



Late models of the car


  • Install the camshaft so that the locating pin is facing upward.

After lubricating the rocker arm block with engine oil, install it on the engine.



Tighten the bolts by hand, then tighten to 24 Nm (8-valve engine). For a 12-valve engine, the torque is 32 Nm.



Install the oil seal (1) of the camshaft (2) using special tools (3) or a suitable piece of pipe.



Install and secure the camshaft timing gear and install the timing belt.

Carburetor engine



Install the fuel pump with 2 new gaskets.

Adjust the valve clearances.

Install the cylinder head cover.

Install the ignition distributor and place the ignition wires onto the distributor cap.

Secure the air filter.
