Camshaft Drive Belt — Replacement (SOHC, 16 Valves) (Mitsubishi Colt 4)

Removal

Disconnect the ground cable from the battery.

Remove the lower left engine cover and engine mount bracket.

Remove the crankshaft pulley.

Remove the power steering hose mounting bracket.

Remove the power steering hose clamp.

Remove the generator bracket.

Remove the upper timing belt cover.

Remove the lower timing belt cover.

Remove the flange.

Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket.

Remove the engine mount bracket.

Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the timing marks on the camshaft gear and the crankshaft gear are aligned, which corresponds to the position of the piston of the 1st cylinder at TDC of the compression stroke.

Loosen the adjusting bolt (2) of the camshaft drive belt tensioner.

Using a screwdriver (3), move the camshaft drive belt tensioner (1) completely back (in the direction of the arrow).

Tighten the adjusting bolt slightly.

Remove the camshaft drive belt.

CAUTION: If the camshaft drive belt is reused, an arrow indicating the direction of rotation must be applied to the non-working surface of the belt.

Installation

Installation is carried out in reverse order, taking into account the following:

Insert the screwdriver (3) as shown above and move the timing belt tensioner fully backward (in the direction of the arrow), and then lightly tighten the adjusting bolt.

Align the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft gears.

Install the camshaft drive belt onto the timing gear in the following order, making sure that the working side of the belt is tensioned: crankshaft, coolant pump, camshaft, tensioner roller.

CAUTION: After installing the camshaft drive belt, turn the crankshaft wheel counterclockwise by half a turn, then check the belt tension and the alignment of the timing marks.

Loosen the tensioner pulley adjusting bolt 1/2 to 1/4 turn to allow the tensioner spring to move the pulley and provide belt tension.

Turn the crankshaft clockwise 2 turns and make sure that the timing marks are aligned.

CAUTION: Never rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise.

Check that the timing belt teeth do not protrude above the camshaft wheel (1) in the sector marked (A) in the figure and that it is correctly engaged on both pulleys. Then tighten the tensioner roller adjusting bolt to the appropriate tightening torque.
