Elements of the high pressure fuel pump
The start of the fuel supply can be checked both on the removed and on the installed engine. A dial indicator is required for verification. The verification conditions are:
- The toothed belt tension must be correct;
- Engine management must be properly adjusted;
- The engine must be at operating temperature and fast idle must be engaged.
Examination
Switch off the ignition.
Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC position.
Slightly loosen the union nuts of the injection line on the pump with a wrench while holding the pressure valve.
Remove the screw plug (control plug) on the cover of the injection pump.
Insert adapter and small dial indicator (measuring range 0 to 3.0 mm) instead of a control plug.
Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise about 30°before TDC, checking that the adapter is correctly inserted. Set the dial indicator to «0».
Rotate the crankshaft slightly to both sides, checking to see if the dial indicator needle is moving. Then precisely set the crankshaft to 30°before TDC.
Turn the crankshaft clockwise to position 7°after TDC. The pointer indicator should show the required value of 0.97-1.03 mm.
Adjustment
If the obtained value does not correspond to the required ones, it is necessary to slightly loosen the fastening of the 2 nuts of the injection pump.
Until a value of 1 mm is obtained, turn the injection pump to the right or left and temporarily tighten the nuts of the injection pump.
Repeat the feed start test and, if necessary, correct the adjustment.
Unscrew the adapter with a dial indicator and tighten the control plug with a new gasket to 15 Nm. Tighten the bolt to 20 Nm.
