Note: If you don't have the proper tools or don't want to go through the hassle of honing, most auto body shops will do it for a reasonable price.
2. Before honing the cylinders, install the main bearing caps and tighten the bolts to the required torque.
3. There are two types of cylinder hones available - the flexible hone or 'bottle brush' and the more familiar spring-loaded block hone. Both hones will work, but for less experienced mechanics the easier to use 'bottle brush' is better. You will also need kerosene or honing oil, rags and a power drill. The procedure is as follows:
a) Fix the hone in the drill chuck, compress the balls and insert the hone into the first cylinder (see illustration). Put on a protective mask!
17.3a. If you are honing cylinders for the first time, a bottle brush type hone will give the best results
b) Lubricate the cylinder with sufficient honing oil, turn on the drill and move the hone up and down the cylinder in increments that produce a fine grid pattern on the cylinder walls. Ideally, the lines of the pattern should intersect at an angle of 60° (see illustration). Use sufficient lubricant and do not remove more material than is necessary to achieve the desired surface finish.
17.3b. The surface must have a uniform mesh pattern with lines intersecting at an angle of 60°
Note: Piston ring manufacturers may require a smaller intersection angle than the traditional 60° - consult the piston ring manufacturer's instructions.
c) Do not remove the rotating hone from the cylinder. Turn off the drill and continue to move the hone up and down the cylinder until it stops, then squeeze the balls and remove the hone. If you are using a bottle brush, turn off the drill and, turning the chuck in the direction of normal rotation, remove the hone from the cylinder.
d) Wipe the oil from the cylinder surface and repeat the procedure for the remaining cylinders.
4. After honing, round off the top edge of the cylinders with a fine file to prevent the piston rings from catching on the edge when installing the pistons. Do not scratch the cylinder walls with the end of the file.
5. It is necessary to completely wash the cylinder block with warm soapy water and remove all traces of abrasive dust that was formed during honing.
Note: The cylinder liners are clean when a lint-free cloth soaked in clean engine oil no longer picks up honing dust, which appears as a grey film on the cloth, when wiping the cylinders. Clean the oil passages with a brush and rinse them with running water.
6. After cleaning, dry the unit and coat its treated surfaces with liquid anti-corrosion lubricant. Wrap the unit in a plastic cover to keep it clean and set it aside until assembly.
