Removal, installation and disassembly

1. Before starting work, unlock the front wheel hubs.

2. Remove the front wheels, remove the front brake, move to the side and secure.

3. Remove the hub locking mechanism and take out the axle shaft retaining ring.

4. Use a puller to press out the steering rod pin by removing the cotter pin and unscrewing the nut.

5. Using a puller, press out first the lower and then the upper ball joint, remove the hub assembly with the steering knuckle and journal.

6. Carefully remove the left axle shaft.

7. Mark the position of the right outer axle shaft and remove it.

8. Remove the right inner axle shaft (using pullers MB990241-01 and MB990211-01).

9. Remove the right axle shaft housing. To do this, remove the spring ring of the inner axle shaft, unscrew the self-tightening nut of the housing bracket and remove the bracket.

10. When removing the bearing, bend back the edges of the dust cover.

11. Install the bearing locking device so that chamfer A rests against the bearing race.

12. To press out the bearing, place the axle shaft with the device on blocks and knock out the axle shaft using hammer blows.

13. Press the cover off the inner axle shaft and remove the seal from the axle shaft housing.

Assembly

1. Press the new oil seal into the axle shaft housing using the MB99095501 tool so that the surface of the oil seal is flush with the end of the housing.

2. Using a 75x4 mm mandrel, press the dust cover onto the inner axle shaft and fill the cavity of the cover with grease.

3. Press the bearing onto the axle shaft using a press and tooling (MD990560 and MB998348-01).

4. Place new spring rings on the axle shafts and insert them into the gearbox, tap with a rubber hammer, and install the right axle shaft housing.

5. Attach the right half shaft to the inner one, tightening the nuts to a torque of 54 N·m.

6. Install the shock absorber (if it was filmed).

7. Install the steering knuckle with the hub (see figure subsection 10.2.8).

8. Install the adjusting washers and the locking ring, check the axial clearance, which should be 0.2–0.5 mm. If necessary, adjust the clearance by selecting washers.
