Camshaft and high pressure fuel pump drive
1 - camshaft gear; 2 - installation mark; 3 - crankshaft wheel; 4 - installation mark; 3 - fuel injection pump wheel; 6 - flange; 7 - toothed belt; 8 - tensioner spring; 9 - belt tensioner; 10 - crankshaft timing mark; 11 - oil pump wheel; 12 - tension roller.

The diesel camshaft is a five-bearing camshaft drive provided by a toothed belt. The toothed belt also drives the high-pressure fuel pump through the sprocket, the oil pump and the balance shaft. The belt tension is provided by a spring-loaded roller, which rests against the middle of the belt span between the sprockets of the fuel and oil pumps. On the opposite side, the belt is tightened by a roller. The second toothed belt drives the balance shaft.

If the camshaft is removed from an engine installed on a vehicle, loosen the wheel bolt and turn the crankshaft until the timing marks align. Unscrew the bolt and remove the wheel together with the belt. Place the wheel with the belt on the lower belt cover.

Examination

Check the camshaft runout by mounting it on lathe centers.

The pointer indicator leg should rest against the central bearing journal. Turn the camshaft 2 revolutions and read the indicator reading, which you divide in half. If the runout exceeds the norm, replace the camshaft. The procedure for checking the surface condition of the camshaft bearing journals is no different from that discussed above for gasoline engines.

Check the axial play of the camshaft. To measure the play on a diesel engine, measure the width of the camshaft bearing journal, which is subtracted from the width of the corresponding camshaft bed. The difference will be equal to the value of the axial play.

Installation

Lubricate the camshaft journals, bearings and covers with engine oil and install the camshaft into the cylinder head; rotate the camshaft a few revolutions.

Install the caps according to the numbers (the numbers are on all caps except for the 1st and 5th, on three caps the numbers are in the place shown in the figure).

Tighten the bearing journal cover bolts by hand. Install the shafts with the rocker arms. Tighten the bolts by hand. Tighten the cover bolts and rocker arm axles.

The rocker arm axle spring is installed in a recess on the bearing cover.

Install the camshaft correctly into the cylinder head - with the pin in the upper position.

Install the camshaft oil seal correctly. Use the tool when installing.

1 - camshaft oil seal; 2 - camshaft; 3 - device.

Put on the timing belt with the camshaft toothed wheel and tighten the bolt. Tighten the bolt with a torque of 80-100 Nm. Install the remaining removed valve timing components.
