Note: Before assuming that the brake system is faulty, make sure that the front wheel alignment is correct and that the vehicle is loaded evenly.
46. When braking, the car pulls to the side
1. Brake pads damaged or contaminated with oil on one side. Check as described in Chapter 9.
2. Excessive wear of brake pads or disc on one side. Check and correct.
3. Loose or disconnected front suspension components. Check and tighten all bolts (see Chapter 10).
4. Brake mechanism malfunction. Remove the brake mechanism and check for piston sticking or other damage (see Chapter 9).
47. Noise (high pitched squeal when braking)
1. Wear of the brake pads of the disc brakes. The squealing sound is produced by the rubber control inserts when they rub against the disc. Replace the brake pads with new ones immediately (see Chapter 9). If the friction material is completely worn out, it is necessary to check the integrity of the brake disc as described in Chapter 9.
2. On 1985 and later Galants, noise can be eliminated with special shims (part number MB500400). Ask your garage for Technical Service Bulletin STB-85-05-00.1.
48. Increased brake pedal travel
1. Partial failure of the brake system. Check the entire system and correct the fault (see Chapter 9).
2. Insufficient amount of working fluid in the master cylinder. Check (see Chapter 1), add fluid and bleed the system (see Chapter 9).
3. Incorrect adjustment of the rear brakes. Perform several starts and stops. If this does not correct the situation, check the self-adjusting mechanism (see Chapter 9).
49. "Soft" pedal
1. Air in the lines. Bleed the brake system (see Chapter 9)
2. Damage to flexible hoses. Check all hoses and pipes in the system. Replace if necessary.
3. Loosening the bolts/nuts securing the master cylinder.
4. Malfunction of the master cylinder (see Chapter 9).
50. To stop the car, you need to press the pedal more force
1. The brake booster is faulty (see Chapter 9).
2. Excessive wear of brake pads. Check and replace (see Chapter 9).
3. One or more pistons in the brake mechanism or working cylinders are jammed. Check and repair (see Chapter 9).
4. Oily brake pads. Check and replace (see Chapter 9).
5 Newly installed brake pads have not yet been bedded in. It takes some time for new pads to bed in to the disc or drum.
51. The brake pedal reaches the floor with little resistance
Little or no fluid in the master cylinder reservoir due to poor sealing of the brake pistons, loose, damaged or disconnected brake lines. Check the entire system and repair.
52. Pedal pulsation during braking
1. Incorrect installation of the brake mechanism. Remove and inspect. (see Chapter 9).
2. Disc or drum defective. Remove (see Chapter 9) and check lateral runout and parallelism. Resurface or replace disc or drum.
