Note: Due to the complexity of the automatic transmission design, it is difficult for an amateur mechanic to properly diagnose and service this unit. In case of malfunctions other than those described below, the car should be shown to a specialist.
38. Common problems with the shift mechanism
1. Chapter 7 describes the procedure, inspection and adjustment of the automatic transmission gear shift mechanism. Common problems associated with poor gear shift adjustment are as follows:
- The engine starts in positions other than park and neutral.
- The gear shift indicator shows a gear other than the one actually used.
- The vehicle moves when the parking position is set.

39. The transmission does not downshift when the gas pedal is pressed to the floor
Chapter 7 describes how to adjust the throttle cable to ensure proper gear shifting.
40. Slipping, rough shifting, noisy or vehicle does not move in forward or reverse gears
1. There are many reasons for the above mentioned malfunctions, but the amateur mechanic may only have to deal with one - the level of the working fluid.
2. Before showing the car to a specialist, check the level and condition of the working fluid as described in Chapter 1. If necessary, top up the fluid to the norm or replace the fluid and filter. If after this the problem is not solved, show the car to a specialist.
3. On Galant models from 1985 to 1987, rough or slow gear changes may be due to the fact that the piston of the downshift servo does not move well. Ask the car service center for the STB Maintenance Bulletin-87-21-008.
41. Leakage of working fluid
1. Automatic transmission fluid is dark red in color. A leaking fluid should not be confused with a leaking engine oil, which can easily be blown onto the transmission by air flow.
2. To locate the leak, first remove all dirt and oil deposits from the transmission case with solvent or steam. Then drive the car at low speed so that the air flow cannot blow the fluid away from the leak. Raise the car and locate the leak. Typically, leaks occur in the following places:
- a) Oil pan: Tighten the mounting bolts and/or replace the oil pan gasket (see Chapter 7)
- b) Filler tube: Replace the rubber seal installed where the tube enters the gearbox housing.
- c) Gearbox oil lines: Tighten the fittings at the points where the lines approach the gearbox and/or replace the lines.
- d) Vent tube: The gearbox is overfilled and/or water has entered the working fluid (the verification procedure is described in Chapter 1).
- d) Speedometer connector: Replace the O-ring installed where the speedometer cable enters the transmission housing (see Chapter 7)
3. On 1986 and later Galants, a leak in the torque converter area may be caused by a leaking O-ring between the front pump cover and the converter housing. Ask your dealer for Technical Service Bulletin STB-86-21-007.
