Warning: The electric cooling fan may turn on at any time, even if the ignition is off. When working near the fan, turn off the power to the fan or disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
Examination
1. The air damper only works when the engine is cold, so this check should be done before driving.
2. Remove the upper air cleaner cover. It is held in place by wing nuts and side clamps. If you need to disconnect the vacuum hoses, mark their position to ensure proper reconnection. Set the cover and nuts aside.
3. Look in the center of the air cleaner housing. In the carburetor channel you will see a flap plate.

4. Press the gas pedal to the floor. The choke should close completely. Start the engine, watching the choke. Do not put your face close to the carburetor, as backfires are possible, which can cause serious burns. When the engine starts, the choke should open slightly.
5. Allow the engine to idle. As it warms up to normal operating temperature, the choke should slowly open, allowing additional air to flow through the carburetor.
6. After a few minutes, the choke should open fully to the vertical position. Briefly press the gas pedal to ensure that the high-speed cam has moved away.
7. You will find that the RPM corresponds to the choke position. With the choke fully closed, the engine is running at a high idle speed. As the choke opens and the throttle moves away from the high speed cam, the engine RPM decreases.
Cleaning
8. With the engine off, use a commercially available aerosol carburetor cleaner to clean the contact surface of the choke shaft where it passes through the carburetor body. Also clean the high-speed cam and linkage.
