Checking hydraulic compensators (Mitsubishi Pajero 4)

If after starting the engine an extraneous noise (knocking) from the hydraulic lifters appears and does not disappear as the engine warms up, carry out the following check.

Note:
  • Extraneous noise caused by a malfunction of the hydraulic compensators occurs immediately after starting the engine and changes in accordance with the engine speed. However, this noise does not depend on the actual load on the engine. Therefore, if the noise does not occur immediately after engine start-up, if it does not change in accordance with engine speed, or if it changes in accordance with engine load, then the hydraulic lifters are not the cause of the noise.
  • When a hydraulic compensator malfunction occurs, the noise almost never disappears, even when the engine is idling after it has warmed up. The only case when the noise may disappear is insufficient care of the engine oil and the knocking of the hydraulic compensators in this case is caused by the formation of sediment (pollution) motor oil.


1. Start the engine.

2. Make sure that the noise appears immediately after starting the engine and that it changes with the engine crankshaft speed. If the noise does not appear immediately after starting the engine, or if it does not change in accordance with the change in engine speed, the malfunction is not caused by the hydraulic lifters, look for another cause of the malfunction. Moreover, if the noise does not change in accordance with the change in engine speed, the cause of the malfunction is probably not the engine. (In these cases, hydraulic lifters operate normally).



3. When the engine is idling, make sure that the noise level does not change when the engine load changes (for example, when shifting from the "N" position (Neutral gear) to position "D" (Movement, main gear)). If the noise level changes, the cause may be collision of parts due to wear of the crankshaft bearings or connecting rod bearings. (In such cases, hydraulic lifters work normally.).

4. After warming up the engine, let it idle and check for any extraneous noise.

If the noise has decreased or disappeared, the knocking of the hydraulic lifters may be caused by sediment (pollution) motor oil. Clean the hydraulic lifters.

1) Allow the engine to cool down sufficiently.

2) Turn the crankshaft two full turns.

3) Perform a simple check of the hydraulic lifters.

If during a simple check of the hydraulic lifters any rocker arms can be easily pushed down, replace the corresponding hydraulic lifters;

If after a simple check it turns out that all hydraulic compensators are in normal condition (if any of the rocker arms cannot be pushed down easily), look for another cause of the problem.

Note: You can check whether the hydraulic lifters are in good condition by performing a leak test.


Caution: Before installing a new hydraulic valve lifter, make sure it is completely bled of air.


5. Remove air from the hydraulic lifters.

6. If the noise does not disappear even after bleeding the hydraulic lifters, perform the following checks.

Perform a simple check of the hydraulic lifters.



1) If during the check one of the rocker arms can be easily pushed down, replace the corresponding hydraulic compensator;

2) If during the check two or more rocker arms can be easily pushed down, the cause may be a blockage in the oil passage leading to the cylinder head; Check for blockage in the oil channel and clean if found; if no blockage of the oil channel is detected, replace the hydraulic lifters.

3) If after a simple check it turns out that all hydraulic clearance compensators are in normal condition (if neither of the rocker arms can be easily pushed down), look for another cause of the problem.

Note: You can check whether the hydraulic lifters are in good condition by performing a leak test.


Caution: Before installing a new hydraulic lash adjuster, make sure it is completely bled of air.


7. Start the engine and check that the extraneous noise has disappeared. If necessary, remove air from the hydraulic lifters.
