Examination

1. The drive belts are V-belts. They are located on the left side of the engine and their condition and correct tension are very important for the operation of the engine.

2. The number of drive belts on a vehicle depends on the equipment installed. One belt transmits drive from the crankshaft to the alternator and water pump, and the remaining belts transmit drive to the air conditioning compressor and power steering pump.

12.3a Main forms of wear of drive belts

a. Small cracks; b. Lubricant ingress; c. Scuffing; g. Always check the underside of the belt

12.3b Check the belts for the following signs of wear - if the belt is worn, replace it

3. Check all drive belts along their entire length for cracks, delamination of the material, frayed edges and signs of wear (12.3a and 12.3b).

12.4 Measuring belt deflection using a ruler and a bar

1. Plank; 2. Ruler; 3. Belt deflection; 4. Check that the ruler is perpendicular to the bar

4. To check the belt tension, press on it with your thumb with a force of approximately 3 kg at a point located in the middle between the two pulleys and check the belt deflection (12.4).

Adjustment

5. To carry out the adjustment, it is necessary to move the unit receiving the drive on the mounting bracket.

12.6 Move the generator to adjust the belt tension

1. Adjusting bolt; 2. Water pump pulley; 3. Crankshaft pulley; 4. Generator mounting bolt; 5. Generator pulley

6. On some units, this requires unscrewing the adjusting bolt and moving the unit as required (12.6).

12.7 Loosen the lock bolt and tighten the adjusting bolt to adjust the belt tension

1. Regulator; 2. Adjusting bolt; 3. Lock bolt

7. On other units, it is necessary to unscrew the locking bolt. Tighten the adjusting bolt for the correct belt tension and tighten the locking bolt (12.7).

Replacement

12.8 When installing the drive belt, make sure that it is installed exactly in the middle of the pulley

1. Correct; 2. Incorrect

8. To replace the belt, loosen the belt tension and remove the belt from the pulleys. Some belts require other belts to be removed first. When installing a new belt, make sure it is positioned exactly in the middle of the pulley and adjust the belt tension (12.8).
