Periodically inspect the wires for damage, cracks, broken insulation or corrosion. Check the condition of the contacts and clean them from corrosion. Always disconnect the negative terminal wire first and connect it last.

Battery



Removal



1. Disconnect both cables from the battery, starting with the negative cable.

2. Disconnect the mounting clamp.

3. Lift the battery. Please note that the battery is heavy.

4. After removing the battery, inspect the tray to check for corrosion.

5. When replacing the battery, make sure that the parameters of the new battery (dimensions, capacity and output current) are exactly the same as those of the one being replaced.

Installation



6. The battery is installed in reverse order.

Power cables



Examination



1. Periodically check the cables along their entire length, damage, cracking or burning of cable insulation, as well as corrosion are not allowed. An unreliable battery connection can cause failures when starting the engine, as well as deterioration in the performance of the engine.

2. Check the condition of the connections of the poles with the terminals, the presence of corrosion, cracks and loose wire fastenings. The presence of a white flaky coating under the insulation at the terminal indicates corrosion of the cable conductors and the need to replace it. Check the terminals for corrosion and deformations and the condition of the fastening bolts.

3. When removing cables, always disconnect the battery from ground first and connect it to ground last, to avoid shorting the battery terminals with the tool used to tighten the terminals. If only the positive terminal cable needs to be replaced, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal first (the procedure for removing cables is described in detail in Chapter 1).



Replacement



4. Disconnect the old cables from the battery, trace the cable routing along their length and find the places where they are attached to the starter and to the ground, disconnect the cables from the starter traction relay and ground. Remember the route along which the cable is laid in order to lay the new cable in place of the one in use.

5. If the cables are to be replaced with new ones, take the old ones with you when purchasing the new ones. It is extremely important that the new cables exactly match the old ones. The positive pole cable is easily distinguished from the negative cable - the insulation of the positive pole cable is usually red, these cables have a larger cross-section, and the battery terminal has a larger diameter. The insulation of the ground connection cable is black, the cross-section and terminal diameter are smaller than those of the positive battery pole cable.

6. Clean the threads of the battery cables on the starter solenoid and on the body, remove traces of corrosion.

Memo



To prevent corrosion, lubricate the threads with petroleum jelly or a special protective compound for battery terminals.

7. Connect the cable to the starter solenoid or to ground, and tighten the nuts and bolts securely.

8. Before connecting the new cable to the battery, make sure the cable is long enough and will be installed without tension.

9. First connect the cable to the positive terminal of the battery, then to the negative terminal.
