Removal

Disconnect the ground cable from the battery.

Remove the left mudguard under the engine.

Place a jack and a wide board under the oil pan. Raise the jack to support the engine without lifting it.

Remove the engine mounts.

Remove the engine bracket.

Remove the alternator belt and power steering pump belt.

Remove the air conditioner tensioner and belt.

Remove the water pump pulley together with the power steering pump pulley.

Remove the crankshaft pulley.

Remove the front engine covers.

Remove the center cover, PCV hose and breather hose from the cylinder head cover.

Disconnect the wires from the spark plugs.

Remove the cylinder head cover and its gasket. Remove the semicircular plug from the head.

Turn the crankshaft clockwise and align all timing marks on the timing belt. The marks on the camshaft gears must match the top surface of the cylinder head (B), and the locating pins (2) (guide pins) in the center of the camshaft gears (1) and (3) must point upwards. This sets the engine to a position where the piston is at TDC of the compression stroke.

CAUTION: Do not touch the crankshaft or camshafts in this position. This may cause serious engine damage.

Remove the automatic tensioner.

Remove the camshaft timing gear.

Remove the tensioner pulley.

Remove the throttle body bracket.

Carefully remove the crankshaft position sensor.

Remove the exhaust camshaft gear and front camshaft seals.

It is necessary to hold the camshaft with a key at the hexagon only to prevent the shaft from turning. Do not try to block both gears - they break easily.

Starting with the front camshaft bearing caps, loosen the cap bolts in several steps, working from the front caps to the rear caps. Remove the bearing caps.

Remove the camshafts.

Installation

CAUTION: Check the condition of the camshaft lobes. If any shaft is worn, replace it along with the tappets for that cam.

Before assembly, generously lubricate the camshafts and journal with clean engine oil and install the camshafts into the cylinder head.

After installing each camshaft (2) in place, turn it so that the locating pin (1) on the gear side is located at the top.

The exhaust shaft must be turned another 3 turns clockwise.

The remaining operations are carried out in reverse order.
